2009-2010

Although the weather was uncooperative this show season, with a blizzard causing a week off school and two cancelled road shows, the team rallied together and made it through a packed and exciting season. “This year was about flexibility,” President Alexis McCurrin said, “expecting the worst and making the best out of practice we had together.”

Gymkana performed two full roadshows in one day, beginning the hour-and-a-half drive to Hagerstown at dawn, showing off for Salem Avenue Elementary School in the morning, then performing their traditional evening showcase at Hagerstown Community College. By the time the truck was unloaded at the School of Public Health that evening, troupers had experienced a high-energy 18-hour day. Along with school performances, the troupe also presented for a Catholic church, a UMD women’s basketball game, a UMD men’s basketball game, and Maryland Day.

McCurrin also commended the younger members of the team, stating with pride that most of the team leaders were second-year troupers and this year’s officer body also leaned younger than most. Newer troupers were the heart of the team, and they brought innovation, support, and a fearless energy that created an exciting year for Gymkana.
