2007-2008

This year, Angie Zavaglia was added to the assistant coaches roster. After graduating in 2006, she spent the next year doing volunteer coaching for the team. She was a trouper for five years from 2001-2006, served as design chair and vice president, and won the David A. Field Best Trouper Award in 2006.

In the fall, Gymkana performed two halftime shows— one for UMD’s Maryland Madness and one for the Washington Wizards in the Verizon Center. Also that semester, the College of Health and Human Performance became the School of Public Health. With the support of Dean Dr. Robert Gold, Gymkana became a recognized outreach program of SPH.

In the spring, President Ben Prescott said that despite the team’s youth and inexperience (there were only two fourth-year troupers), the strength and dedication of the team could not be understated. Even in the face of illness and weather difficulties, each performance of the season seemed to be stronger than the previous. Head Coach Scott Welsh also complimented the team on their perseverance through winter weather during truck loads and show setups. Before Home Show, members of the team dedicated time to hand-build 25 new wooden chairs for the chairs act as well as additional panels for expanding the backdrop. Home Show was a success, with Derric Stotts performing an impressive double flip over the fire hoop.
